Dale Earl Livengood (1965)

My dad was Dale Livengood (1965 I think) he passed on August 9th of this year. Just wondering if anyone had any memories of him during his high school years. I know it's been awhile but anything is appreciated.

Linda Carol Schultz (O'Connor) (1970)

In response to Frank's message about working at the University Ave. Car Wash, many of us bowled at University Lanes summer league.  I remember sneaking into the Red Coat Inn (remember that one - inside the bowling alley?) and getting autographs from all the members of the Cascades!  I think I still have the Red Coat Inn napkins someplace.  I worked at the Humane Society and got paid with a dog!  I'm sure my parents were happy about that one!  Janet Smith (Palazzolo) and I worked in the "dog house" giving out information and inside behind the counter, filling out forms for adopted animals.  Great fun.  Thanks for bringing back those memories!

Mitzi Kay Schmeiser (Lewis) (1982)

Hi all,

I never worked during the school year, but during the summers, I worked (volunteered) at Colina del Sol as a swim instructor.  I was given the children that were scared to death of the water or ones that were slow at catching on.  I taught there from the age of 12 until the summer between senior year and college year. I had only 1 student fail taking classes with me and that was my OWN brother.  He thought he could slide through because "zissy" was his instructor.  lol  I had over 400 students over those 6 years and every once in a while, I am lucky enough to run into one of them and they remember me.  One of my students I just recently found out became a marine biologist because of the time we spent together on the lessons.  Crazy.  I loved that job.  Now I get to teach our son the swimming and he loves it, although he didn't believe at first that "Mommy" knew what she was doing.  lol

Felicia (Lisa) Antoinette Schmitz (Insunza) (1983)

I worked at the McDonald's at 54th and El Cajon with quite a few others from Crawford. Some even went on into management positions.  I never made it past crew chief.  We had a lot of fun there.  That's where I met my husband (David Insunza CHS '79) and we've been married for over 30 years.  There were a few times we had discount hamburgers (I want to say they were 10 cents each).  Those days were hell - people would order 10 or 20 at a time.  Just remember one of the managers yelling back to the grill "balls to the wall folks."  Oh God, the expression 10 - 10 turn just popped into my head!!  PTSD!!!

Georganne Dukes (Greiner) (1971)

One of my first jobs in high school was handing out information brochures and answering questions for a new residential development in Del Cerro.  The buider was Hallmark Homes.

I also worked at Bob's Big Boy on El Cajon Blvd as a waitress (boy I loved those hamburgers) and then as a hostess at Sir George's Smorgesboard on Balboa, in Kearny Mesa.

During the time frame of 1970 to 1971 I was the City of San Diego Fire Department's Miss Flame, and attended many parades, banquets, fund raisers, anything that had to do with fire prevention.  Smokey Bear and I became pretty good friends.  However, the Dalmation mascot wasn't too impressed!

I entered and won many San Diego Dance contests which entitled me to go to Los Angeles for a Dance Competition at a big car show.  During the car show, I met a very nice young man who was showing his car in the show.  He gave me a tour of the show and spent much time with my mom and I.  I kept thinking this guy looked really familiar, but couldn't put my finger on it.  At the end of the car show/dance contest we said our good byes and he gave me a very polite kiss. I kept saying his name over and over in my head, and it finallty dawned on me!  Jay North.....Dennis the Meance, lol!

Susan Cathy Dreylinger (Ellsworth) (1967)

I too remember University Lanes and loved moonlight bowling. I also would sneak a peek into the Red Coat Inn, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Cascades singing Listen to the Rhythm of the Falling Rain. Got my very first bowling ball at the Pro Shop there and still have the ball and bag.
I also remember walking down the long hill on College Avenue to shop at Kinney's for the latest shoes and then goung next door to Robert Hall for clothes. Then had to trudge back up that hill it was a ling hike especially in the summer.
My family ate a Der Weinerschnitzel once a week when they hae 5 (or was it 10?) dogs for a dollar - any kind of hotdog. They were so good.
Best memories were of the great basketball and football games with Hoover High and then going to Carnations for a black and white sundae, playing our favorite songs in the jukeboxe at our table, and perhaps trying to "take home" one of their brown hot chocolate mugs. Great memories.

John "Jack" Abernethy (1964)

I had a paper route and worked at Robert (Bob) Hall's Shell Station at El Cajon and Rolando Blvds in Roland Village, during my Horace Mann and Crawford days. I also picked up a few bucks now and then as the founding bandleader (sang and played trumpet) of The Twilighters, and later sang for awhile with Wayne Lawson's Varitones. Great times! Susan Elisabeth Cone (Milow) (1968)

I worked at Matthews Cleaners in North Park, my junior and senior (68) years.  I worked two hours every night and then all day on Saturday.  I was rich beyond my wildest dreams.  I loved reading someone talk about shopping at Robert Hall.  I used to cash my paycheck and head right there.  Where or where have the years gone?

I forgot to mention that I graduated in 1967. Anyone out there from this graduating class? We didn't live far from the College Drive-in. (With the big neon majorette on the market twirling her baton.) My brother and I would dress in our pjs and our folks would take us to the Drive-in to watch the latest flicks. I took the bus to school from the Jack in the box at around 62nd and El Cajon Blvd., that is until I got my beautiful gold sand-colored '65 Ford Fairlane coupe with big bucket seats and a push button radio in my senior year. Still remember the first time I sat in it in the garage. I was soo happy! Wish I still had it now. My favorite teachers were Mr. Young and Mrs. Brownell for Spanish, and Mrs. Merzbacher for clerical procedures. There was another great teacher who also taught clerical stuff but can't recall her name. She was younger and had really pretty long hair. Mrs. McGowen was my counselor and very nice.
sad to see so many from class of '67 are already gone.

David John Hughes (1975)

Class of 1975

I really had the best job possible for a 16 year old thru 21 years -- I worked at Lou's Liquors on 58th and Streamview.  I provided the hook-up for my friends who had the $ for a six pack -- I'd drop the goods with the trash near the dumpster after collecting the $ -- most of which the a**hole owners Joe Greeno and Doug Esh never got to see.  Then after graduation while still a minor I was the assistant mgr for another liquor store under the Normal Heights sign -- Corner Liquor, where my buddy Gary Patterson ('75) and I would set up our pals, deal with the strangest drunks, and party with the animals who lived in the Heights.  Monster parties across the street at the old theater -- Halloween and New Year's Eve were epic!

Correction to my last post today. It was the Campus Drive-in, not the College Drive-in!

Joseph Edward Falcone (1964)

Joe Falcone class of 64.

My first job was as a junior high guy mowing lawns in the neighborhood for a buck a lawn.  Boy do times change.  Then I worked construction for a summer,  then the miniature golf course on University at the food place.  Then when the Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan Show, I was an assistant "chef" at a restaurant.  After that a barber before the USAF.

Tom West (1975)

Class of '75. My high school work resume included the following; I started working (a real paycheck job) at 16-years young at Der Weinerschnitzel at College & Montezuma. A couple of older classmates worked there as well. Made $1.40/hr plus $.05/hr additional for closing. I think I made grand total of $.60 cents/week extra for all the additional labor to close. There may or may not have been spirits kept in the ice machine.

Moved up to washing dishes at Hillside Hospital on El Cajon Blvd with Reed Wilson (Class of '75) for the astounding (at that time) amount of $2.50/hr. Two dishwasher lines side-by-side. Uneaten food may or may not have been used in food fights as we had to hose-down the kitchen and mop-up anyway. Armida, our Supervisor, was not understanding of this detail.

I then inherited the delivery/stockboy job at Bay City Liquor at El Cajon Blvd & College Ave. Several older neighborhood classmates had previously held this coveted position. At that time, liquor could be delivered if the store delivered groceries as well. Also, the person taking the phone order had to be 21-years old. The delivery person did not. Go figure. Deliveries may not have been made to underage customers. The cash tips far exceeded the hourly wage. Side benefit; I knew where all the parties were located on Friday & Saturday night after I got off work at 7PM.

I also shared a (bicycle) paper route with David Kuhn in the El Cerrito area. I think we spent most of our earnings on records, and breakfasts at The Wagon Wheel restaurent on El Cajon Blvd. We may or may not have purchased alcoholic beverages with our earnings as well.

I also mowed Susie Marko's (Class of '75) lawn for her dad throughout HS for $10/mow. His mower, his gas, small lawn. THAT was the peach HS job because of, well....Susie Marko!

Julie Eskew (Daniel) (1964)

WHERE DID YOU WORK?  GREAT TOPIC. First 'real' job in 1964; usherette at Cinerama Theater on University Ave.  Cindy Free ('also '64) and I started on the same day.  Movie was "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World."  Still love that movie.  Had to learn the alphabet backwards (assigned seating) so we could show patrons to their seats without looking at rows... silently repeated backwards alphabet as we walked down the aisle.  Yes, we were tested.  Best part of job (besides free movies) ... flashlights with long hollow plastic red ends (eliminated glare in dark theater).  When we weren't seating people we ran to the snack bar and had the hollow plastic filled with popcorn.  Butter didn't work so well.  Ha-ha.  Then transferred to Cinerama in Mission Valley @ I-8 and Texas Street (now Qualcomm and Camino del Rio N).  Ah, the good old days.

Cherilyn Louise Larson (Charfauros) (1971)

My first job started when I was 12. My piano teacher, Mrs. Martinez, somehow recognized my gift for teaching. She paid me .50 cents a lesson to teach the pop music part of the lesson. She would sit back and observe, giving her comments after the student left. I started my own teaching studio about the same time , charging $1.50 per lesson. When mrs Martinez went back to work at AT&T I inherited her students.  My piano teaching continues to this day. Of course now I have the masters degree in piano teaching. Miss Redmond at Horace Mann allowed me to accompany the girls chorus which really kept me practicing.  Shareen, a fellow 1971 graduate helped me get hired for housework for a local elderly lady. We alternated days. The lady soon discovered Shareen was much better at ironing her husbands shirts than I was. She would still pay me but we usually ended up at her friends house doing music. They were writing a musical. Then at the beginning of senior year I got an awesome job at Kress in Grossmont center. The manager Mr. Nelson worked around my school and piano teaching schedule. I continued working there for 3 years until they closed. I was elated when I got a .10 raise to $1.75 per hour.  Starting to work so young taught me the value if hard work and allowed me to save enough money to move out when I turned 18. Times sure have changed

Anyone in contact with Jean (Buehner) Marmet, class of '71?  She's a friend I'd like to find.  Oh, and my first job was selling Christmas Trees at the lot across from College Grove...then selling records at Wrights World of Sound on El Cajon Blvdsmiley.

Heidi Lovell Triggs (Clausen) (1971)

Other than babysitting, which I began doing at age eleven, my first job with a real paycheck was at Newberry's on 54th street.  My mother worked there as well.  My beginning wage was $1.35 an hour, which beat the 50 cents an hour I made babysitting.

Lorelei Leigh Taylor (1973)

My first job was at a high end women's clothier, John Hogan, in Fashion Valley. I made like $1.50 an hour. I worked Christmas season during my junior and senior years, then full time during the summers. We had some interesting and wealthy clientele. I used to wait on Desi Arnaz's second wife who looked just like Lucille Ball. She was very sweet. She carried a tiny white poodle in a white tote bag. I would hold the bag while she tried on clothes. I really wanted to take her little dog out of the bag and play with her, but I didn't dare.

My second job while I went to SDSU was at Bill Gamble's Menswear in Parkway Plaza. I ended up working there full time as the bookkeeper and head cashier. I live in El Cajon now and go to Parkway plaza once in awhile. I can barely figure out where the store was now, it's all changed so much. I think it's where Ulta is now.
